Brakes - All you Need to Know

HP Race Brake Pads - S 1000 RR (ECE/USA)

Product description
  • Dual Carbon brake pads for front axle.
  • Optimised braking power.
  • Enhanced thermal stability for race use.
  • Improved braking control: soft response, progressive.
  • Increased pressure-point stability.
  • Less wear (similar to standard brake pads).
  • Suitable for standard front brake caliper.
  • Scope of supply (1 set for 1 brake caliper)¹: 4 brake pads including note on installation.
  • Pad thickness: 8.0 mm.
  • For use on racing circuits only (not homologated for use on public roads).
  • ¹ 2 sets are needed for each vehicle.
Details
  • For race-circuit riding, BMW Motorrad recommends the use of HP Race brake pads, which are specially optimised for this extremely sporty usage.
  • Of necessity, standard brake pads are designed to evince the best possible properties across all possible conditions, for example even in the wet and when cold. Consequently, the design has to be a trade-off, because only in this way can standard brake pads retain their efficiency under all circumstances. HP Race brake pads are optimised specially for race-circuit use and develop significantly better properties under severe thermal loading.
  • Improved vibration behaviour:
  • HP Race brake pads can deposit a very uniform blackish, dark-blue layer on the brake disc (a thin coating of material removed from the brake pads by friction). This layer can considerably reduce or in ideal circumstances completely prevent vibration when the brakes are applied.
  • Compliance with the instructions below will help distribute the material as uniformly as possible on the brake disc:
  • A brake disc should not be used with different types of brake pad. If possible, always use a set of brake discs in combination with the same brake-pad material.
  • When using HP Race brake pads for the first time and when the brake discs are new, comply as closely as possible with the instructions below to bed in the brakes.
  • Instructions for bedding in brakes correctly (manufacturer's recommendation):
  • Gently apply the brakes a number of times until the pads make full surface contact with the face of the brake disc.
  • When contact between disc and pads has been established in this way, repeatedly brake with short brake applications so that heat can build up gradually in the discs and the brake pads until the brake disc is coated with a thin blackish, dark-blue layer of material deposited by the brake pads.
  • Allow the brake discs and brake pads to cool.
  • There should now be a uniform blackish, dark-blue layer on the brake disc. The brakes can now be applied for full stopping power.
  • Do not clean the brake disc.
Recommended in combination with:
  • HP Race handbrake lever with remote adjustment (and HP Race clutch lever)
  • HP Race brake bleed valves
Note
  • For use on racing circuits only (not homologated for use on public roads).

HP Race brake bleed valve - S 1000 RR (ECE / USA)

Product description
  • Patented system for brake filling and bleeding.
  • Fast, straightforward, reliable and completely leaktight.
  • Integrated non-return valve for one-man operation.
Details
  •  Patented system for brake filling and bleeding: quick, easy, clean and reliable.
  • Brake-fluid changes are easy, completely reliable, a simple step-by-step procedure.
  • Brake bleeding in a matter of minutes, no helper's assistance required.
  • Brake-bleeding system used successfully in motorsport and in aeronautics.
  • Total leaktightness preserved throughout the entire procedure of filling and bleeding the brake system.
  • The bleed valve consists of 2 parts with non-return function. In the process of filling and bleeding the brake, only the top part of the valve is backed off. There is an O-ring integrated into this part of the valve.
  • Air cannot make its way via the thread into the brake system while brake bleeding is in progress (the seal at the thread is preserved).
  • 100 % braking performance by avoidance of air in the brake system.
  • Does away with the risk of brake fluid escaping in the brake bleeding procedure and damaging the surface of the brake caliper or painted parts of the motorcycle.
  • Integrated non-return valve for one-man operation.
  • Dispenses with the fault-prone step of synchronised opening and closing of conventional bleed screws.
  • A drop in pressure causes the bleed valve to close automatically and remain closed until the next bleed pressure surge.
  • Less wear and tear on the tapped bore in the brake caliper: The repeated opening and closing of conventional bleed screws in the brake-bleeding process puts severe strain on the tapped bore in the aluminium brake caliper.
  • The larger longitudinal bore is less prone to the formation of deposits or dirt than the conventional small transverse bore.
  • Long service life.
  • Easy conversion: The HP Race brake bleeding valve takes the place of the standard bleed screw in the brake cylinder.
  • Scope of supply: 2 bleed valves for the front brake, 1 bleed valve for the rear brake, installation instructions and instructions for use.
  • Homologated for use on public roads.
Recommended in combination with:
  • HP Race brake bleed gaiter (preliminary available from February 2013)
  • HP Race brake lever with remote adjustment (and HP Race clutch lever)
  • HP Race brake pads

HP footrest system - S 1000 RR, HP 4

Product description
  • CNC-milled HP footrest system with individual adjustment options, to fit the S 1000 RR and HP 4 (standard for HP 4 Competition).
  • Material: High-strength aluminium alloy.
  • Light in weight, extremely high dimensional stability, robust.
  • Anodised in three colours (titanium coloured, red, colourless).
  • The anodising process forms a protective coating that effectively resists corrosion.
  • The HP front footrest system offers a wealth of adjustability options for adapting to the rider's ergonomic needs and preferences:
  • Stepless adjustment of the footrests: Rotation for height adjustment, plus fore-and-aft ad-justment (translation). By comparison with the standard footrests, this system offers the added benefits of up-and-down and fore-and-aft adjustment. Gradations marked on the footrest system make it easy for the customer to make adjustments (identical positioning on both sides by preference).
  • Adjustability of the shift lever: The peg has fore-and-aft adjustment (3 positions). The relative positions of the shift lever and the footrest generally remain unchanged, in other words when the footrest is adjusted the shift lever is also automatically moved at the same time. The range of positions for the peg mean that clearance can be optimised to suit the size of the rider's boot (of benefit for shifting gear).
  • Adjustability of the brake lever: This peg also features fore-and-aft adjustment to any of 3 positions. By contrast with the shift lever, the brake lever does not automatically change position when the footrests are adjusted. This fore-and-aft adjustment feature is designed primarily to permit adjustment of the position of the brake lever relative to the footrest.
  • The HP footrest is approx. 20 mm shorter than the standard footrest for more ground clearance at extreme angles of heel.
  • The footrest is knurled, so it offers good grip (even in wet conditions).
  • Unlike the standard parts, the footrests are not pivot-mounted.
  • With Carbon heel guard (smaller than the HP Carbon heel guard available as an option for the standard footrests; this optional accessory cannot be combined with the HP front footrest system).
  • Scope of supply: Left footrest system, right footrest system, instructions for ergonomic ad-justment.
  • Can be installed only by authorised BMW Motorrad dealers. For installation instructions see the repair manual on the RSD (Repair & Service Data BMW Motorrad) DVD. If the motorcycle is not equipped with ABS the original brake-light switch has to be installed (please add a switch to your order because the switches are often damaged in the course of the disassembly procedure, see 'Order information').
  • No homologation certificate necessary (homologation for the HP footrest system is included in homologation for the motorcycle).
  • HP rear footrest system
  • Rear footrests to match the front footrests.
  • Non-adjustable.
  • Can be installed by customer.
  • Replacement for the standard footrest system.
  • Logo: BMW Motorrad logotype and Gilles badge (GG).
Additional information
  • Also possible in combination with the shift assistant (restricted fore-and-aft adjustment, can be adjusted only back from the standard position).
  • HP front footrests and rear footrests can be ordered separately.

HP Race gearshift-pattern reverser - S 1000 RR, HP 4

Product description
  • Replacement of the existing shift lever to reverse the shift pattern.
  • Enables ultra-fast upshifts, even when the motorcycle is heeled over sharply in left-hand bends.
  • For use on racing circuits only (not homologated for use on public roads).
Details
  • Reversal of the shift pattern: Up to engage first gear; the rider then upshifts by pressing down the gearshift lever.
  • The HP Race shift-pattern reverser makes for shorter acceleration times by making upshifts all the faster even when the motorcycle is heeled over to the maximum angle of lean in left-hand bends (the rider does not have to get the left foot underneath the shift lever).
  • Scope of supply: Shift lever for shift-pattern reverser, pivot mount, selector rod for modification of the shift assistant, fasteners, installation instructions.
  • Can be installed by customer.
  • Note: Installation entails cutting into the left half of the engine spoiler, the requisite fasteners are included.
Additional information

  • Compliant with the rulebook, because the original pinion cover can subsequently be reused.
  • Use in combination with the optional HP shift assistant is possible.
  • The latter enables very fast upshifts without any interruption in tractive power.
  • Without closure of the throttle and without the clutch being disengaged, ignition and fuel supply are interrupted for a fraction of a second to permit the upshift. This means that valuable fractions of a second can be gained as the motorcycle accelerates.
  • Available as an optional extra or retrofittable as an accessory.
  • Can be used in combination with the standard footrest system and the HP footrest system available as an accessory.
Recommended in combination with:
  • HP shift assistant (combination of shift assistant and shift-pattern reverser only with the new shift assistant, part number 77 25 8 528 774).
  • HP footrest system.
  • HP Race Power Kit.
  • HP Race Cover Kit.
  • HP Race Calibration Kit.
